I’m not sure it’s a “stunningly original” concept. He simply applied (albeit ingeniously) some basic tenants of Italo Calvino’s ‘Invisible Cities’ to the world of sci-fi 😉
But yes, for science fiction Miéville does introduce outside concepts in a fascinating way.
